In the supermarket, there are more and more foods stored in tin cans. This type of container is very popular since it allows them to be stored for a long time without being damaged. Generally, most are installed in the pantry and can stay there for a very long time. The big drawback: once this box has been opened, if all of its contents have not been consumed, you must absolutely avoid storing it in the refrigerator. And this for many reasons. We explain why.
Although nutritionists always favor a healthy, organic and balanced diet, we don’t always have the opportunity to cook or concoct healthy recipes. Also, very often, we fall back on all kinds of canned products. They are easy to store, have a very long expiry date and are perfect for cooking our meals faster. However, many people still make the mistake of improperly storing these food containers. To preserve your health and that of your loved ones, it is absolutely necessary to change certain bad habits. Tell yourself that a badly preserved box is not without danger!
Why shouldn’t you keep these already opened cans in the fridge?
First of all, at the time of purchase, one should always check these cans carefully. If you find that they are dented or rusty, do not take them. This state causes the box to lose its tightness and, when opened, this favored the entry of various micro-organisms and bacteria which would contaminate the interior. Similarly, if your boxes, kept for a long time in the cupboard, show this kind of rust, it is better not to consume them. This phenomenon explains precisely why you should not keep an open can in the fridge. In fact, it stems from the contact between the metal of the can, the food and the oxygen which can cause rust stains. Also, as a safety measure, when you open a box and you do not intend to use all of its contents, it is strongly recommended to transfer the remains of the food to another airtight container, plastic or glass.
Note that tin cans are generally protected against rust on the outside thanks to a very thin layer of tin. Inside, they also have a layer of pewter or baked enamel or even both. Thus, the container does not easily oxidize or leak any substances from the box into the food. The latter, for the most part, must not only be kept airtight, but also be stored away from light. That’s why they are packed in tins and not in glass jars. Of course, if the box itself looks flawless when you buy it, then it all comes down to home. If you do not store these containers properly in suitable places, far from heat or humidity, they will not have a problem of oxidation. If this is the opposite case, then you will have to expect unpleasant surprises.
When to throw away a tin can?
The expiry date is indicated on the packaging of the preserves. But sometimes it can last much longer, especially if there are no visible weatherings or rust. Cans are designed precisely so that perishable foods of animal or vegetable origin can be kept longer. For this, these containers are hermetically sealed and treated exclusively with steam.
When it comes to perishable foods, kept for a limited time, we are talking about semi-preserved foods, which must always be kept in the refrigerator. This is the case, for example, with canned anchovies. If consumption is delayed, the anchovy flesh can quickly decompose.
As for the liquid introduced inside these boxes, it mainly helps to better preserve its contents. It is usually a mixture of oil or water and salt to protect the preserves from external agents. This avoids the addition of any type of artificial preservative. That’s why it is not necessary to throw away this liquid: you can perfectly enjoy it and integrate it into the preparation of your dish.
In addition, it is advisable to always wash the top of the box before opening it, as well as to use clean utensils to remove the food inside. Remember, once opened, the food becomes perishable. It must therefore be consumed quickly!
